What is a perfect destination? Let’s be honest: “perfect” depends not on external factors, but only on you. When choosing a destination to go on holiday, everyone has different likes and dislikes that they must consider.
Having been to over 30 countries, I sometimes struggle to plan my next vacation since I want to spend my time and money on a destination that is as close to perfect as possible. Whether you travel solo or with family/friends, everyone wants to go to a destination they will love!
In this article, we will go through the top travel destinations (for differing budgets) for each type of traveller. You might be wondering, which type of traveller are you at this moment of your life? See the list below!
Active
Relaxed
Party-er
Cultural
Soul-searcher
Local
#1 – Active
This traveller loves adventure and different types of sports! They always want to stay moving. They may be interested in sports like surfing, biking, ziplining, ATV driving, and more…
#2 – Relaxed
They love sitting and relaxing, maybe eating chips and having drinks by the beach. Sitting poolside or even lounging in their hotel room may be all they look for in a vacation!
#3 – Party-er
This traveller loves to dance the night away while listening to great music. In plain terms, they love to party!
#4 – Cultural
This traveller wants to learn about culture and history. They may choose to visit one of the Seven Wonders of the World or eat an authentic Italian meal in Rome whilst holding a book on the city.
#5 – Soul-searcher
They crave a unique experience like visiting ancient temples, cities, landscapes or monuments. They may wish to be more around the tranquillity of nature, rather than cities which reminds them of the office.
#6 – Local
This traveller is always seeking an authentic stay amongst the locals. They may enjoy simpler activities, like visiting the grocery store or the local market.
The Perfect Destination for YOUR Perfect Holiday
#1 – Active
You need a playground that has as many activities as your heart desires.
For the active traveller, consider:
Sydney, Australia; Reykjavik, Iceland; Tamarindo, Costa Rica
Highlighted above is the gorgeous Costa Rica, known for its surfer-approved beaches, huge national parks, and healthy “Pura Vida” lifestyle (translates to pure life).
#2 – Relaxed
Imagine laying on a hammock above crystal clear water that is fully transparent and sparkles in the sun.
For the relaxed traveller, consider:
Ubud, Bali; Santorini, Greece; the Republic of Maldives
Seen here is the Maldives. A group of islands make up this beautiful nation of pristine beaches. An ultimate dream for those looking to relax and soak in the sun!
#3 – Party-er
You need a big fun-loving town to visit – maybe aim to be there on a Friday and/or Saturday.
For the party-er traveller, consider:
Ibiza, Spain; Las Vegas, U.S.A.; Berlin, Germany
Pictured here is Berlin, Germany – other than its Museum Island, and its historic monuments like the Berlin Wall, this city is known as one of the party capitals of the world. You can hit the clubs there at any point during the night, and stay until morning (some close even later)!
#4 – Cultural
You need a historical site in which you have high confidence that all your experiences and photos will have a strong cultural significance behind them.
For the cultural traveller, consider:
Cairo, Egypt; Cusco, Peru; Istanbul, Turkey
Above is the beautiful Hagia Sophia, in historic and culture-rich Istanbul. Walking around this city, taking in the views, and eating the delicious cuisine were all amazing in my personal experience.
#5 – Soul-searcher
No more scrolling on Facebook for you, you’re searching for a way to open your mind through travel. Pick a breathtaking and peaceful location.
For the soul-searcher traveller, consider:
Bali, Indonesia; Rome, Italy; Varanasi, India
An ancient ritual occurring in Varanasi, India is shown above. Known as “the city of light”, Varanasi treasures its spirituality immensely. Hinduism is popular here (as well as yoga).
#6 – Local
You want to walk, eat, and drink where the locals do!
For the local traveller, consider:
Medellin, Colombia; Dublin, Ireland; Lisbon, Portugal
A yellow streetcar is synonymous with Lisbon. Above, we see the locals out and about in the city. This European capital is not only affordable (relative to North America where we are located), but it’s also welcoming to tourists. There is lots of sightseeing to be done as well!
Finally, if you truly love travel, here are some additional tips:
You can find good deals on flights if you create an account with several airlines, track the price changes on the specific flight you desire, and then book it as far ahead of your vacation date as possible. Links to a few different airlines:
From Canada – Air Transat ; Sunwing ; Air Canada
From Europe – Wizz Air ; Ryan Air ; Air Portugal
From U.S. – Jet Blue ; United Airlines
This takes some effort, but it can save you a penny (actually, many of them). Booking at least six months before the trip also ensures you can fill up on travel plans and supplies earlier, and leave all your worries in the past!
To feel less anxious about your trip, consider getting travel insurance (ex: ATOL protection in the U.K. which you can read more about here – ATOL Protection Info)!
If you have a social media account (ex: Facebook), you should use it to start a travel log! I create and post vlogs (= video logs) to remember my travels. If you want it only for you, go to settings to make it private/not viewable to your contact(s). This works for Instagram, Facebook, or TikTok.
In conclusion, going on a trip as a Local, Party-er, or Soul-searcher traveller is more affordable than going the Active, Relaxed, or Cultural route. Of course, the destination also affects the total cost, so be mindful of that. Wherever you make it in your travels, I hope you make enough happy memories to last a lifetime!
